Wax melts are one of the easiest products for a candle brand to add: no wick, no jar, lower cost per unit, and a great way to let customers sample a scent. The packaging, though, is where many small brands get stuck. A clamshell on its own looks like a test batch. A printed box turns the same clamshell into a gift, a shelf product and a reason to remember your brand. This guide walks through how to choose custom wax melt boxes: style, size, finish, what to print, and how to order a small first run.
Why put wax melts in a box at all?
Many makers sell melts in a bare clamshell with a sticker. That works for markets and repeat buyers, but a box solves a few common problems:
- Shelf presence. A printed carton stands up on a boutique shelf or craft-fair table and shows your logo from across the room.
- More space for information. Scent notes, weight, usage directions and safety wording fit easily on four side panels instead of one small label.
- Gift-ready. Shoppers buying for someone else want something they can hand over without wrapping, especially in November and December.
- A consistent brand line. If you already use custom candle boxes, matching wax melt boxes make your whole range look like one collection.
Box style: why the straight tuck-end works for melts
For wax melts, the most practical style is a straight tuck-end folding carton. It is a simple rectangular box with a tuck flap at the top and bottom. It ships flat, folds in seconds, and opens easily for customers who want to smell the product before buying.
Our custom wax melt boxes are made this way from 350 gsm paperboard: a sturdy, smooth white board that is printed with your artwork on the outside and stays clean white inside. It is light enough for mailers and rigid enough to keep corners crisp on a shelf.
How to size a wax melt box
Size is the decision that most often goes wrong, so measure before you design anything. Our reference size for wax melt boxes is 4 × 1.5 × 3 inches (length × width × height), which suits many standard clamshells, snap bars and small sample packs. If your melts are a different shape, choose a custom size and enter your exact dimensions.
A simple way to measure:
- Measure the packed product, not the mold. Put the melts in their clamshell or wrap exactly as you will sell them, then measure length, width and height.
- Add a small allowance. Add a little room on each dimension so the product slides in without forcing the panels. Too much room and the clamshell rattles; too little and the corners bulge.
- Think about orientation. Decide whether the melts will stand upright or lie flat. This changes which panel becomes the front and where your logo should sit.
- Check your mailer. If you ship boxes inside a mailer, make sure several boxes fit together without wasted space.
Every order includes a dieline and digital proof before production, so you can check the size and artwork placement before anything is printed.
Choosing a finish
Paperboard wax melt boxes are available in five finishes. Each one changes how the box looks and feels in a customer's hand:
- Matte – smooth and low-glare. Easy to read, works with almost any design, and a safe choice for a first order.
- Gloss – brighter colors with a reflective shine. Good for bold, colorful or playful scent lines.
- Soft Touch – a velvety matte feel that reads as premium. Popular for neutral, minimal brands and gift sets.
- Gold Foil / Silver Foil – metallic accents that catch the light. Use foil for the logo or a scent name and keep the rest of the design simple.
Not sure which to pick? The PackGroove Sample Box lets you see and feel matte, gloss, soft touch and foil samples in person before you commit. For a deeper look at finishes on candle packaging, see our custom candle box size and finish guide.
What to print on a wax melt box
With a tuck-end box you get a front, a back, two sides and two flaps. A layout that works well for most brands:
- Front panel: logo, scent name and one short line about the scent.
- Back panel: scent notes, how to use the melts with a warmer, net weight and your contact or website.
- Side panels: brand pattern, color band or a list of scents in the collection.
- Safety and compliance wording: check the labeling rules that apply to your products and where you sell them, and leave enough space so the text stays legible.
Tip: if you sell many scents, design one shared box and change only the scent name area. That keeps your artwork consistent and makes it easy to reorder small quantities of each scent.
If you don't have a designer, our "Design it for me" add-on (+$29) means our team prepares the layout for you. You can also simply upload your logo and we will place it on the dieline.
Ordering a small first run
You don't need thousands of boxes to look professional. At PackGroove you can order from 3 boxes, which makes it practical to test a new scent, a seasonal edition or a holiday gift set before scaling up. Quantities go up to 1,000 boxes when you are ready.
How the process works:
- Choose your options – finish, quantity and size (standard or custom).
- Send your artwork – upload your files or logo, or add "Design it for me".
- Approve your proof – review the dieline and digital proof.
- Production – boxes are printed in-house in 1–3 business days and shipped across the USA, with free US shipping on orders from $75.
Because every box is custom made, we don't accept returns, but if a mistake is ours, we reprint at our cost. That is one more reason to read your proof carefully before approving it.
