If you sell on Etsy, Shopify or TikTok Shop, your packaging is often the first physical contact a customer has with your brand. It doesn't need to be expensive or complicated, but it should protect the product, look intentional and make it easy for buyers to remember where they ordered from. This checklist walks through the pieces small online sellers actually use, what each one does, and how to order branded packaging without committing to thousands of units.
1. Start with the product box: the part customers keep
For candles, soap, cosmetics, jewelry and other small goods, a printed product box does most of the branding work. At PackGroove our product boxes are made from 350 gsm paperboard in a straight tuck-end style, and you can print your logo, colors, ingredients or care instructions right on the box.
A few practical tips for choosing one:
- Measure the product, not the box you have now. Note length, width and height of the item itself, then leave a little room so it slides in without forcing. If the standard sizes don't fit, we offer custom sizes.
- Pick a finish that matches your price point. Matte reads calm and natural, gloss makes colors pop, soft touch feels velvety and premium, and gold or silver foil adds a highlight to a logo or name.
- Keep the front simple. A clear logo and product name usually look better in listing photos than a crowded design.

2. Choose the shipping layer: mailer or outer box
A paperboard product box is a presentation box, not a shipping box. For orders that travel through the mail, put the product box inside a corrugated outer layer. Corrugated board has a fluted middle layer that adds stiffness and cushioning.
- Printed Mailer Boxes work well when you want the unboxing to start the moment the package is opened.
- Kraft E-Flute Mailer Boxes give a natural brown look that pairs well with handmade and eco-minded brands.
One thing to know before you design: corrugated packaging at PackGroove is UV printed only. Foil and soft touch finishes are available on paperboard boxes, not on corrugated. If you want foil, put it on the product box inside and keep the mailer clean and simple. Our guide on paperboard vs. corrugated boxes explains the difference in more detail.
3. Add small extras that do a lot of work
The pieces that make an order feel personal are usually the cheapest ones. Pick one or two rather than all of them:
- Thank-you cards – a short note, your shop name and your website or social handle so repeat buyers can find you directly.
- Product insert cards – usage tips, ingredients, a care routine or a "how to reorder" message.
- Logo stickers – seal tissue paper or close a plain mailer with your logo for an instant branded look.
For candle makers, a care card with burn instructions is especially useful. For soap and skincare brands, an ingredient or usage card answers questions before the customer messages you.
4. Order in small quantities and test before scaling
Many small sellers delay branded packaging because they assume they need huge minimums. At PackGroove, orders start from 3 pieces, and production takes 1–3 business days. That makes it realistic to:
- Test two or three designs and see which one photographs best for your listings.
- Print a small run for a seasonal scent or limited collection.
- Try a premium finish on a best-seller before using it across the whole line.
Not sure which finish to pick? The PackGroove Sample Box lets you see and feel matte, gloss, soft touch and foil before placing a bigger order. You can read more about planning low-minimum orders in Custom Boxes in Small Quantities.
5. Get the artwork right the first time
You have two easy paths:
- Upload your own logo or artwork when you order. High-resolution files with clear edges print best.
- Use "Design it for me" for +$29, and our team lays out the design for you using your logo, text and colors. See the Design Service for details.
Either way, double-check spelling, website addresses and product names before you approve. Because every order is custom made, we can't accept returns, but if a mistake is ours, we reprint at our cost.
6. Make it work for listing photos and social content
Branded packaging pulls double duty for online sellers: it protects the order and gives you better content. A few ideas:
- Shoot your product next to its box for the main listing photo, so buyers see what arrives.
- Film a short packing video: product into box, box into mailer, sticker on top. This kind of process clip is easy to make for TikTok and Reels.
- Keep the box colors consistent with your shop banner and logo so everything looks like one brand.
7. Plan for gift orders and events
Around holidays, many Etsy and TikTok Shop buyers are purchasing gifts. Custom paper gift bags with fabric handles come in 4x2x6, 5x3x7, 6x3x9 and 8x4x10 inch sizes and are handy for local pickup, markets and pop-up shops. Offering a gift-ready option can be an easy upsell when it fits your product.
